Brett Albee gets a knee to the head by 'Virgil Rez Dog' Zwicker

Fresh off the commanding victory over Brett Albee at Strikeforce San Diego, Virgil “the Rez Dog” Zwicker returned back to the gym to help coach and mentor Dan Henderson prepare for his blockbuster bout with Fedor Emelianenko. Exchanging blows with Hendo is not everyone’s idea of a day at the office, but for the Rez Dog its everyday business. Training at Team Quest for the majority of his fight career has given Zwicker the opportunity to be in the gym with top-level athletes on a daily basis like fellow teammates Dave Herman, Jesse Taylor, Sam Alvey and Fernando Gonzalez. He often gets the call to participate in camps with other fighters and has become a familiar face up at Vladimir Matyushenko’s gym (VMAT), training with the “Janitor” himself and his boys Jared Hamman and Antoni Hardonk.

Strikeforce has given Zwicker the nod once again to come in and face undefeated rising star Lorenz Larkin for the main event bout September 23, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout is at light heavy weight and we will finally get an opportunity to see Zwicker have his hand at Strikeforce’s rising 205 roster. The only losses on the Team Quest fighters’ record come in the heavy weight division were he was out-weighed significantly in both fights. Never turning his back on a challenge he took the risk and now he is ready to make a statement in the light heavy weight division.

Both fighters Larkin (11-0) and Zwicker (10-2) lean heavy on their stand up game knockouts and finishing fights by referee stoppage seemed to be their forte. Both fighters have eight KO/TKO stoppages tallied on the stat sheets as this bout looks to be a war. The Rez Dog’s warrior mentality and ever-growing fan base has caught the eye of Zuffa and has secured him a multi-fight contract. Tune into Showtime for the battle on September 23 at Strikeforce Challengers 19 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Virgil “Rez Dog” Zwicker trains with team mates at the Team Quest facility in Murrieta, CA . MMA Fighters give there take on friend and training partner explaining what its like in the ring with the Rez Dog. Guest include UFC standout Dave “Pee-Wee” Herman, TUF alumni Frank Lester, Bellator rising star “Smile’n” Sam Alvey, and fellow warrior Fernando Gonzalez. Get a up close look in the gym with the Rez Dog!

Con Campaign – Barely Scraping By

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Con Campaign is Jonathan Carter, “Barely Scraping By” is a collection of his solo works. He recorded in the vintage gear palace known as Flight 19 Studios in Escondido, CA with Russian legend Valery Saifudinov. On this record he sought out to make a solid project with tracks people could relate to.  Opening songs like “Loudmouth,” call out society’s arrogance and compare it to ignorance. While songs like “Skeletons” encourage those to look within themselves to free inner demons.

Con Campaign was destined to have that dirty classic sound that is often attempted but rarely recreated. The album contains 12 tracks filled with instruments & lyrics all completely written/arranged, composed, and played by one man. On a journey through his songs he invites you to open your mind to an original sound. “Barely Scraping By” is now out and will be available at select locations as well as iTunes and TheLIEshow!!!

21st Annual San Diego Music Awards

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

Humphrey’s by the Bay held the 21st annual San Diego Music Awards sponsored by Blue Moon and SDCityBeat on Monday, August 8th at 7pm.  This year the SDMA’s included live performances by Cuckoo Chaos, Little Hurricane, Gilbert Castellanos, Dynamite Walls, The Silent Comedy and other SD acts. The awards this year raised more than $25,000 to provide Taylor Guitars to local schools.

One of the highlights for the evening was a very special Lifetime Award presented to The Penetrators.  Little Hurricane was the biggest winners of the night, winning a total of three awards for Album of the year, Best Alternative, and Best Alternative Album.  To everyone’s surprise neither Jason Mraz nor Slightly Stoopid won this year. Instead Switchfoot won Artist of the Year.

The night was going good until “some guy” was “drunk-diving” into all the chairs at the end of the ceremony.  Apparently he wasn’t drunk, but just being a jackass.  I was lucky enough to find a video of it on YouTube.

Los Bullets Invaded Carlsbad, CA.

The Bullets
On Sept. 10th, 2011 L.A. reggae sensation “Los Bullets” or “The Bullets”, bring their boss sounds to the Carlsbad coast.  These guys formed a super group from some of the most talented reggae-soul artists in Los Angeles. Malik Moore’s unique vocal patterns and range take you back to your favorite part of soul music from its greatest era. Meanwhile Roger Rivas, also of the famed “Dirty Reggae” group Aggrolites, lays down his signature sound on the Hammond B3 that is truly unique. Noe Santana and Ricky Chacon drive the guitars putting them directly in the pocket, as Thomas Ochoa keeps your chest filled with bass. Percussion is tastefully added by Boogie and the drums are delivered properly by the young but experienced Alex McKenzie, also of the Aggrolites.

All of the musicians are seasoned and the tunes are amazing as they are presented. This will be a show that is not to be missed and if you can’t make it then pick up, download or order an album to enjoy the true reggae-soul on your own time. Boar Cross’n in Carlsbad, CA is the venue to be at on Saturday September 10th, 2011. The bar is fully stocked and the environment is alive, so come with the expectation to dance and you wont be disappointed.  To add to the festivities we will be celebrating with Social Green’s lead vocalist Ian Crosby on his day of birth. There will be special guest performances as well as free giveaways including gifts from your local indoor garden supply store “D.I.G.S” and much more!  Real music is alive and you can enjoy it this weekend!
